Self Storage Tips

Here are some valuable tips to help you to get the most out of your storage unit:

  • On larger units leave a walkway to the rear of the unit.
  • Make sure you fill boxes completely.  Stuff open areas with packing paper or peanuts to prevent collapsing when stacked, or use sturdy plastic containers.
  • Heavier or larger boxes should be stored on the bottom of stacked items.
  • Items that you want to access frequently should be stored towards the front, and made easily accessible.
  • Vacuum sealed bags work very well for draperies, bedding, and clothing.
  • For finer clothing consider wardrobe box this will allow you to hang your clothes which will help them keep their shape.
  • Pack books flat to avoid damaging their spines.
  • Utilize dresser drawers or other cabinets to maximize space.
  • When storing delicate heirlooms, use specially constructed boxes or containers, make sure to clearly label FRAGILE.
  • Wrap all fragile items and breakables such as dishes, glasses, ornaments, etc. separately.  Pack these items tightly into strong or reinforced boxes, filling any gaps with paper or filler.  Mark “Fragile” on any boxes containing breakable items.
  • Clearly label all boxes and containers so you can easily identify contents.
  • When practicable disassemble furniture (e.g. bed frames, table legs, etc.) this will help maximize your space.
  • Protect furniture including mattresses and box springs with plastic covers and stand on end.
  • Store large pieces of furniture vertically to save space.  Stand sofas on end when possible (sofa beds should not be stored on end).
  • Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
  • Wrap mirrors, pictures, and framed artwork with blankets or towels. Never store flat.
  • Water should be drained from all appliances before storing.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly opened/ajar to prevent mildew.
  • When storing lawn and garden equipment, or any motors please drain all fuel to avoid corrosive damage or fumes.
  • Use a trash can to store shovels, hose, rakes, etc.
  • Keep a fold-up step stool in your space for accessing hard-to-reach areas.
  • Invert light chairs so they are “seat-to-seat”, there's usually space between the legs for small, lightweight items.
  • Try not to lean furniture against outside walls.
  • Separate lamp bases and lamp shades and wrap them for protection, use clean packing paper to wrap each lamp shade individually. Often you can “nest” several lamp shades together.
  • Make the most of your space, go vertical, use as much height as practical (portable shelving units are recommended)

It's a good idea to keep an inventory of all the items you've packed.  Ideally, include an estimate of the replacement value of each item you store.  Consider taking pictures of valuable items.  This will help you make accurate insurance claims in case of unforeseen damage or loss.

Check with your homeowner’s insurance agent to make sure your items being stored are covered by that policy.  In the event you need to purchase coverage, brochures are available in our office.
